Veidekke: Pioneering green hydrogen for asphalt production
Veidekke’s Kristiansund plant, operational since 2023, is the world’s first asphalt production facility to use hydrogen as its sole energy source, producing approximately 3,000 tons of emission-free asphalt. Building on this success, Veidekke expanded its hydrogen-powered operations to a second plant in Ålesund, which officially opened on September 4th, 2024.
This shift from traditional fuels—such as gas, diesel, and propane—to green hydrogen addresses the substantial emissions associated with asphalt production in Norway, estimated at approximately 400,000 tons of CO₂ annually. By delivering green hydrogen, Norwegian Hydrogen enables Veidekke to significantly reduce its carbon footprint and advance emission-free practices within the infrastructure sector.
